After opening my first restaurant in San Jose, I continued to return to Canada every summer to raise money to finance my endeavor. During many of those visits, I joined my dear friend Chef Jarrett on Rivers Inlet just north of Vancouver Island. One unforgettable afternoon while singing, toasting, waiting to catch a fish or two, and simply enjoying the pleasures of the day something suddenly hit the boat's keel. We looked at the other in stupor; maybe we had run aground. Surely this was impossible as we were in deep water in the middle of the channel. Looking around to find the source of the commotion, I noticed a curious gray whale breached just beneath us, apparently wanting to join our festivity. What a remarkable sight as I’m sure we were a surprise to the baby whale as well. Immediately, Chef Jarrett and I ran for our life jackets and began navigating clumsily back to shore. Once at shore, we laughed aloud and gave the playful baby whale a well deserved toast.
